Best Acne Treatments / Effective Acne Treatment

Top Acne Treatments

Everyone would like a quick cure for acne, but it is impossible. At first you may feel that you are not getting better, but it is important to persevere with any treatment.

One of the commonest reasons for failure of a medicine is stopping it too quickly: this applies to both skin preparations and those taken by mouth. Not every cream will suit everyone, and some trial and error may be necessary.

best acne treatments

Most acne treatments come with instructions in the packing box, and it is always worth reading them. They will tell you how often to apply it, how large an area of skin to cover, how long to keep going with it, whether you should soon go on to a higher strength and lastly, what sort of side effects to watch out for.

People with mild acne may not need any treatment at all, but if they do it will always be a skin preparation. Those with moderate or severe disease can quite often manage with skin (topical) preparations alone, but failing this will need to take a medicine by mouth (oral treatment).

Over the counter

It is worth asking the pharmacist about the product you have seen advertised to check whether it really does have an active ingredient, which could help your acne, rather than ingredients, which just make your skin feel better.

Killing the Bacteria

Bacteria are not the most important cause of acne but there is usually some benefit from reducing their numbers. Agents such as hydroxyquinoline (found in Quinoderm cream and Valderma), chlorhexidine (Quinoderm face wash, Triac, Cepton), triclosan (Clearasil medicated, Oxyclean), will all do the job.

Blackhead removal

Removing blackheads is a useful approach, not only because they are ugly, but because they also block the follicles and lead to some of the other changes of acne. Blackheads can be removed in three ways.

First of all, they can be removed by a blackhead extractor (comedone extractor) but these days such as extractors are not used very much because the other methods are better. Clean finger nails should only be used if the blackhead is very nearly ready to drop out anyway.

The second method is by using abrasives, which act rather like sand paper. Another approach is the use of agents which soften the horny layer and this action helps to loosen blackheads. Salicylic acid is used for this, normally at a concentration of two per cent.

Benzoyl peroxide not only loosens blackheads but helps to kill bacteria as well. It is the most widely used agent for this purpose and is found in preparations such as Oxy-10, Topex, Acnidazil, Ultra Clearasil, Acnegel, Panoxyl, Benzagel.

What is Malignant Melanoma?

This form of skin cancer has a terrible reputation for several reasons. The number of people getting melanoma has nearly doubled in the last ten years. It can affect young people. It can spread to other parts of the body and show up years later. Lastly, it may, in the early stages, be difficult to differentiate from normal moles and indeed the tumor may start in a previously harmless mole.

This terrible reputation is, however, largely unjustified. Although less rare than it was, it is still not as common as basal cell or squamous cell carcinomas. Most malignant melanomas are diagnosed and removed in their early stages, in which case, there is approximately a ninety-five per cent chance that they will cause no more trouble.

malignant-melanoma

Malignant melanoma begins either as a new area of pigmentation or as a change in an existing mole. Any area of the body can be affected. Many existing moles change without there being a threat of melanoma, but certain appearances give grounds for suspicion and may warrant its removal for examination under a microscope.

Worrying changes include much variation of the color, for example, light brown, black and red brown; a jagged edge; recent increase in size. None of these changes guarantee that a mole has become malignant, but they should prompt a visit to the doctor.

There has been much discussion in the media concerning melanoma. It has been part of a national campaign to make people more aware of the dangers of too much sunlight and to consult the doctor sooner rather than later if a mole seems to have changed. The obvious goal is to try and pick up most melanomas at a very early stage. It has a negative side because many people will start to worry about moles, which are, in fact, harmless.

The effects of sunlight on the skin are discussed later, but it is important to stress here that there is no doubt about the role of ultraviolet in causing malignant melanoma. Not everyone’s tumor is due to sun but the more sun you get and the more often you burn the more likely you are to develop a melanoma. Just as heavy cigarette smoking seems hazardous today, so in years to come, sun worshiping may seem a stupid pastime.

When a melanoma has developed it should be treated by surgery. It is usual to remove some normal-looking skin around the tumor at the same time to be on the safe side.
